Maria Montessori was born in the town of Chiaravalle, in the province of Ancona, Italy in 1870. Maria was the first female physician in Italy and she was in many ways, ahead of her time.

During her medical practice, Maria observations showed that children learn and build from what they find in their environment. Maria shifted her focus from body to mind and she felt compelled to return to university in 1901, studying psychology and philosophy.

She gave up her university chair and her medical practice to pursue her passion, working with children to understand their ability to learn and absorb information. It was in working with the 60 young students that she founded the first Casa dei Bambini, or "Children's House".

Maria observed that children had an enormous ability to absorb knowledge from their environment, as well, they had extraordinary interest in manipulating materials. Every piece of equipment, every exercise, every method Montessori developed was based on what she observed children to do "naturally," by themselves, unassisted by adults.

One of the first Montessori schools in the United States was established in 1912 by Alexander Graham Bell in his home.
